Got Job Search Direction?

Here is a comment and question I receive quite often from people who are going through a job search – “I haven’t had to look for a job in a long time, how do I approach it?”

This question could come from someone who has been employed by the same company for a long time, a stay at home parent re-entering the workforce, or from someone who has always been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time (and not had to officially look for a job like most people do).

Having personally put people through job elimination, and having gone through it myself on a couple of occasions, I feel compelled to share my basic job search view. If you’ve ever heard of the K.I.S.S. method of doing things, then this is my straight forward thinking of how to approach a simplified foundation for a job search – Keep It Simple, Stupid (no, I am not calling anybody stupid)

In my opinion, there are three main support pillars to this job transition and bridge building process:

Pillar 1) Know your job target / career goal...
Pillar 2) Write a strong résumé that aims at your target...
Pillar 3) Have a solid job networking and résumé circulation plan...

If a situation is due to a layoff or job elimination, then add getting beyond the emotional shock factor as the first thing to do!

Focusing on these support pillars provides a framework and direction for where you want your job search to connect, creating each pillar with close attention to detail so they successfully connect together.
