If You Want to Get Ahead, Stop Talking!

Like all of you, I have interacted with thousands of people over the years. Having spent 25 years in recruiting and most of that time in Human Resources, my numbers are probably higher than most. I can’t tell you how many of them were bored, burned out, frustrated and wanted more from their career. They talked about it all the time. There was just one problem – all they did was talk about it. There was very little (or very inconsistent) corresponding action to bring about a change.

Don’t get me wrong, I had my share of bored, burned out, frustrated and “want more” moments as well. But, there was one difference. I began to do something about it……in the midst of my talking about it. Each time, I would do something about it until I was where I wanted to be.

If you have reached “the wall” with your career and want more, that’s perfectly fine….actually, it’s quite normal nowadays. However, if all you do is talk about it, this does you and the people around you no good. You see, you develop faith for the things you hear, not see (remember the tune you heard in the morning and it was stuck in your head all day long…..ugh!). If you constantly talk about how negative your career is, this is where your faith and actions will reside. You must counter the negative talk with either positive talk or, more importantly, actions to change your circumstances. Further, your negative talk will probably start to cause others to avoid you. Remember, while people will be empathetic to your struggle, even they will only listen for so long!

As the quote which has been attributed to the late Albert Einstein says, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” If you want more from your career, make a commitment to do something to bring about the “more” you desire. It’s up to you and only you to make the needed changes. You can do it, I know you can.
