New Career Fear

Go on! What are you waiting for! Take that first step toward that new and exciting career that you've always dreamed about! What? You're not sure what kind of new career you want? You don't know what it will take to get there? You don't have the time or the money to spend on reinventing yourself? You're afraid a change will disrupt your lifestyle? What will your family and friends think if you fall and can't get up?! All you know right now is that you're miserable in the career you have. STOP IT! The lack of positive thoughts here is making my head spin.

Okay, now that we're all calmed down, what is the real reason most people don't act on their thoughts to change careers? Fear - for all the reasons already mentioned above. Why? Because fear is an emotional response to danger and it triggers anxiety.

Think more positively and rationally - map your strengths and transferable skills from one area to the other, and then identify the skill gaps required to bridge over to the new career. Proceed with caution, but do proceed if at all possible into something that will make you happier.

Remember, even eagles need to get over the fear of falling out of the nest before they can soar!
