Your Career: The Remix
Share
I recently listened to Destiny’s Child’s first record “No, No, No.” I remember thinking how good the original four member group sounded together. Like most people I had almost forgotten Destiny’s Child’s first record was a ballad. The song’s vocal arrangements were flattering and the music was nice. Those factors considered, the tune received minimal airplay. The audience Destiny’s Child attempted to reach wanted to dance, and to reach them, the group knew they needed to come up with a dance record. They decided to release a second or remixed version of “No, No, No.” Produced by Wyclef Jean of the Fugees, the remix contained the same words but employed a much faster beat and lyrical delivery. They even made a new video for it. After witnessing the first “No No No’s” rather lethargic chart movement, the band was ecstatic to see the remix sky rocket to number one on the R&B/Soul charts. The decision to remix the song helped jumpstart their career, one that culminated with Destiny’s Child becoming the second highest female selling group to date.

Like Destiny’s Child, most of us have worked hard to lay down our career foundation. We attended school and mastered the interview process to obtain the right job. Upon landing the position, we realized that either we are not doing what we love or our careers are not progressing at the rate we think they should. When this happens, it’s time for a career remix.

A career remix does not necessarily involve changing careers but it does mean taking an honest look at where you are and where you want to be – and creating a plan for progression. Doing this may result in returning to school to earn the degree or certificate needed to boost their career. For others, it may mean changing their outlook and seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty. In either case, remixing your career will require you to take action.

Do not let the fear of the unknown prevent you making a move that could catapult your career in a new direction. You may not have access to a super producer like Wyclef Jean but American Public University System has a dynamite team of career coaches available to help you remix your career. To
