Company Overview

Extraordinary Grady
Grady Health System was the vision of Henry W. Grady, editor of the "Atlanta Constitution," who worried about the lack of quality health care for Atlanta's poor. In 1892 his extraordinary dream came true when the doors to Grady Hospital were officially opened. Since that time, Grady Health System has grown considerably from its original three story, 110-bed facility - and now stands as one of the largest public health systems in the United States.

Exceptional Care, Remarkable Services
Grady Health System today continues to maintain its strong commitment to the health-care needs of the underserved, while also offering a full-range of specialized medical services for all segments of the community.

Grady now consists of the 953-bed Grady Memorial Hospital, 10 neighborhood/airport health centers, Crestview Health & Rehabilitation Center - and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding, which is operated as a Children's affiliate.

With its nationally acclaimed Emergency Care Center and Burn Unit, Grady Health System has the only level I trauma center in the region and serves as the ambulance provider for the city of Atlanta. The state's only Poison Center is housed at Grady, as well.

The Diabetes Detection & Control Center, Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence, Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, Primary Stroke Center and Avon Foundation Comprehensive Breast Center are also notable components of the health system. Moreover, Grady's Infectious Disease Program was named one of the top three HIV/AIDS outpatient clinics in the country.

Other exceptional medical services include Grady's Regional Perinatal Center and its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Primary Care Center, a dedicated 60 Plus service line for older adults, Teen Services, the Rape Crisis Center, 24-hour Advice Nurse Line - and more.

Medicine Practiced Best Where Taught
Fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Grady Health System is an internationally recognized teaching hospital staffed exclusively by doctors from Emory University and Morehouse schools of medicine. Remarkably, 25 percent of all physicians practicing medicine in Georgia received some or all of their training at Grady.

With more than 5,000 employees, Grady Health System is governed by The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority and manages 921,000 patient visits each year. Millions of dollars in indigent and charity care are provided monthly, while the majority of Grady's revenue comes from Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement. Grady is one of Atlanta's largest employers and generates a positive economic impact of more than $1.5 billion a year for the metro Atlanta economy.

Donors & Volunteers
The Henry W. Grady Health System Foundation was formed in 1993 to help secure donor dollars and other financial resources needed to support Grady's remarkable scope of services and its vital safety net role for the region. Additionally, close to 1,000 Team Grady volunteers and other philanthropic businesses and organizations graciously lend a helping hand throughout the year for patients, family members and staff.
