What Is Ethical?

Would you consider this company or its employees “ethical”??

This company has a little over 500 employees with the following statistics:

  • 29 have been accused of spousal abuse
  • 7 have been arrested for fraud
  • 19 have been accused of writing bad checks
  • 117 have bankrupted at least two businesses
  • 3 have been arrested for assault
  • 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
  • 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
  • 8 have been arrested for shoplifting
  • 21 are current defendants in lawsuits
  • In 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving

Can you guess which organization this is?

It's the 535 members of your United States Congress!

What would the statistics be for your company? Do you even want to know? Does it make a difference what you do “outside the job” or when “no one is looking”?

Most of us would consider ourselves ethical people. However, this begs the question “What is ‘Ethical’?” How often on a daily basis are you faced with decisions that impact others’ lives and/or wallets? How do you make those decisions? What guides you in the gray areas, when the answer isn’t black or white?

Patricia Clason, Director of the Center for Creative Learning and business coach, will share with you a working definition of ethics and some theories as to why ethics is becoming such a hot business topic. She will also challenge you to look within at what guides your decision-making and leadership, and give you some practical tools to assist you in the ethical decision-making process.
