Job Position Purpose / Summary

This position is for an R&D Engineer with Mechanical background and strong hands-on attitude, supporting the full development lifecycle of new products from concept through product realization.

The incumbent will be asked to make contributions to efforts in developing new products and technologies for Recovery applications, and will be spending significant time in our prototyping/testing lab. The incumbent will also support technical aspects of applying technological advances to new product concepts.

Job Position Accountabilities / Expectations

  • Strong focus on hands-on prototyping and feasibility testing activities.
  • Work directly with senior engineers and/or technicians to quickly build or assemble functional prototypes, subassemblies and assemblies, perform prototype testing, and provide feedback on assembly process and design.
  • Develop/modify test methods and identify equipment requirements to support project needs including bench testing, computational simulations, and preclinical testing.
  • Oversees fabrication of fixtures and tooling for prototype testing.
  • Participate in the development, design and troubleshooting of new concepts.
  • Skills to contribute to the design process, make suggestions for manufacturing, problem solving skills, and able to communicate effectively with co-workers.
  • Perform root cause investigation and analysis.
  • Collaborate withing a cross functional team dedicated to developing research efforts for technology and product development.
  • Effectively interact with interdepartmental personnel and teams such as, marketing, quality, and product supply to uphold project plans and achieve project objectives.
  • Makes decisions with moderate assistance; seeks assistance as appropriate from Team Leader or senior members of the team.
  • Support Design Control related activities and creation of other documentation.
  • Applies technical/scientific principles and procedures to creatively overcome challenges.
  • Manages self in accordance with expected behaviors of the Leadership Qualities.
  • Effectively achieves results that meet business and individual objectives.
  • Complete all work in a safe manner consistent with Avanos safety & quality protocols.
  • Plan and carryout assignments with minimal assistance and direction.

Qualifications / Education / Experience / Skills Required

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering with 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Proven experience with hands-on prototyping and testing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of solid modeling (Solid Works preferred), Design for Six Sigma and Labview
  • Experience in the use of general biomedical laboratory equipment
  • Experience with data collection and analysis hardware and software
  • Experience in the Medical Device industry
  • Basic knowledge of new product development process, and methods for gaining customer insights

Other Qualifications:

  • Displays excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as active listening skills
  • Knowledge of statistical principles
  • Ability to interface effectively with health care professionals and medical device customers
  • Ability to travel both domestic and international (up to 25%; must have the ability to obtain a passport)

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, occasionally
