Position Summary
The Food Product Innovation and Commercialization Center (FoodPIC) Quality Systems Manager coordinates, facilitates and conduct client projects and manages quality and food safety with the team. The Quality Systems Manager proposal discussions, draft and present project proposals, develop project work plans upon project assignment and initiation. This individual will also be assigned client projects and be responsible for project execution for those projects. Projects include developing Food Safety Plants, conducting product and process development, conducting pilot plant trials, writing test reports, and communicating reports to clients.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Comprehensive food science skills are needed in order to successfully develop food products.
  • Working knowledge of food chemistry, food microbiology, consumer and sensory science, food manufacturing and food regulations, as well as the ability to coordinate project activities to achieve acceptable project outcomes.
  • Project management skills including project management tools, and technical writing.
  • Research and development skill sets including test planning, vendor coordination, equipment operation, food analysis, and utilization of statistical principles.
  • Understand and practice relevant food safety principles and regulatory requirements so that plant operations are safe and compliant.
Physical Demands
  • Set-up and operate pilot scale equipment, lift and weigh food ingredients of 40 pounds or less, and perform other manual production and laboratory tasks while standing.
  • Trial duration is typically hours.

Facility Quality and Safety
  • As UGA's FoodPIC will operate as a shared food kitchen and manufacturing facility, the position will manage in establishment, execution, and maintenance of the facility quality system. This will involve lab and test equipment calibration, facility sanitation, execution of facility GMP's, and associated documentation.

  • Conduct product development which entails initial design, project planning and execution, product testing and project reporting. Product types include beverage, sauce, confectionery, and other. These activities involve coordination with other staff members including FS&T extension members and students to complete project tasks.

Coaching and Training
  • Provide coaching to students and staff in the execution of client and research projects. The position will develop educational materials and conduct training for FS&T extension workshops and other outreach efforts.

  • Along with other team members, the position will operate all food processing and laboratory equipment and participate in sanitation work as required by projects, both their own in assisting other project leaders.
