This position involves previous experience in animal care, laboratory animal medicine, veterinary medicine, and/or laboratory research.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Excellent communication skills to facilitate problem resolution, receive creative feedback and direction.

  • Knowledge of computers and ability to manage clinical records and clinical data
  • Knowledge of animal care and/or veterinary medicine
  • Animal blood collection experience
  • Reliability to work independently to complete job responsibilities
  • Learn new procedures and solve routine technical problems as needed
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment and records
  • Ability to work in an enclosed environment exposed to smells, dust, and dander of a wide variety of animals including rodents, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, sheep, goats, horses, monkeys, ferrets, pigs, cows, and other large animals, small animals, and exotic animals, etc.
  • Remember large amount of details, know and apply UGA and regulatory agencies' policies, draw appropriate conclusions from information available.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing to a variety of individuals including faculty, staff, auditing agencies, etc.
  • See well enough to perform a physical examination and hear well enough to auscult.
  • Perform duties wearing Tyvek jumpsuit, two pairs of gloves, and a respirator (either N95 or powered air purifying respirator).

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Oversee and help execute lab animal experiments required for the laboratory's research program, which includes collecting samples from animals, planning and organizing animal sample collections and experiments, coordinating with the lab animal facilities, performing specimen collections and treatments, euthanasia procedures, and manages the clinical supply inventory and overall cleanliness and organization of lab animal space.
  • Anesthetizes animals, including determining and dispensing of pre-anesthetic drugs, establishing airway for gas anesthesia, monitoring patient during surgery, recovery, etc.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance in relation to animal experiments, which includes animal protocol preparation and renewal and controlled substance management.
  • Ensure research data from experiments is properly documented and audited.

  • Assist with the rearing of Anopheline mosquitoes including but not limited to keeping all paperwork necessary for tracking the health of the colony, communicating to stakeholders when problems arrive, coordinating the use of mosquitoes for all members in the experiments, and performing the day-to-day maintenance/processes of rearing multiple Anopheline colonies.
